Going Green: Making A Cleaner Greener Waterford

All this month, we're sharing tips to help make your life and Waterford a greener place.

We have some very effective ways to reduce your impact on the planet, and the local ecosystem. Driving less, using less electricity, shopping locally, and reducing food waste, can have a big impact.

A lot of these tips may also save you some cash as well as the planet!

Going Green Tips

  1. When you’re shopping, use reusable shopping bags, or choose compostable waste bags, now available in your local shops.
  2. When doing laundry, use a lower temperature for your washing machine and dishwasher. Wait until you have a full load and minimise the use of the dryer! Or better yet hang out your laundry to dry.
  3. Don’t leave the fridge door open for too long when getting food. It takes 45 minutes for the fridge to cool down to its original temperature afterward.
  4. Replace your old inefficient light bulbs with low-energy LED lights. Start with the lamps in your living room or kitchen where you spend most of your time.
  5. Unplug your appliances when not in use. Remember standby mode uses 20% of the energy they would consume if they were fully on.
  6. When replacing home appliances, choose the highest A rating possible. The difference in cost may be less than you think and a higher rating will mean a lower cost in the long run
  7. Your driving style can reduce energy use! Drive smoothly – harsh acceleration and braking can use up to 30% more fuel and remove unnecessary weights for example roof boxes, and bike racks. Or even better skip the car and try cycling to work, or getting the bus.
