Waterford midfielder Jamie Barron has admitted the Deise were written off both inside and outside the county on Sunday, ahead of their 2-25 to 1-25 win againt Cork at Walsh Park.
Barron fired 1-3 on day one of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship as Davy Fitzgerald's side strengthened their chances of making it out of the province for the first time since the introduction of the round-robin format.
Despite the outside noise, Barron says they were fully focused on the task in hand.
“To be honest, we were very confident in ourselves. We weren’t given much of a chance outside the county and inside the county. We know what we have inside in that dressing room in terms of quality, skilful players and leaders. It’s just about getting all that out on the field. Today was a step in the right direction. Two weeks’ time will be another test for us.”
Winning is a feeling that never gets old. Barron made his 100th appearance for this county at senior level on Sunday - the Fourmilewater man says he's hopeful of many more big days to come in blue and white.
“It’s unreal. It’s a feeling we’ve been craving with a while. We won last year against Tipp but it was a meaningless game. It’s fantastic to get it back. It was worrying when Cork got the goal, but we’ve a lot of work put in strengthening ourselves in a mental form. The next ball was a key one and we won that and put it over the bar. That’s the main thing; that’s how we’re supposed to react to those setbacks. It flies! It’s great to be playing with the lads in there and the lads that have gone before.”
