Henry de Bromhead crowned March winner of Waterford Sports Awards

Henry de Bromhead is the March winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.

The Knockeen horse trainer had another tremendous Cheltenham Festival, training Slade Steel to victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, while Captain Guinness was successful in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Both winners were ridden by stable jockey Rachael Blackmore, who became the first female jockey to win the Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Four of de Bromhead’s arsenal also finished second across the course of the four-day festival, as the Butlerstown man ascended into the top ten trainers of all-time at jump racing’s premier event.

Speaking on accepting the award, de Bromhead said: “We had a great month. We were very fortunate to win the Supreme Novices’ and the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, and I’m delighted for everyone - all the team and all involved. It’s brilliant to get the award. We had a great month domestically and abroad.”

“Fingers crossed, but it’s all finishing out really well at the moment. All of our horses are running well and seem to be in great form, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.

The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2025, where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
