Ray Recommends: May's Irish music picks from The Shift

Hello, it's Ray C here again with another selection of newly released Irish music that has been featured on my show The Shift over the month of May. There were some amazing tunes out in May, some of the artists you may know and some you may only be discovering for the first time. Either way, Enjoy!

Ilsantino – Stay A While

Ilsantino is the moniker of Dublin-based songwriter and electronic musician Paul Nolan.

If you know me and my show, I have an awful soft spot for all things synthy and 80s. Well, Paul gets that retroelectro vibe just right with this one and the video is class. Links below:

Katharine Timoney – Life Came Into Colour

Life Came Into Colour is taken from Katharine’s EP of the same name. This to me is one of the best Jazz/Soul/RnB vocalists from Ireland I have ever heard. I can’t really write something epic about it, I recommend you just have a listen.  Oh, actually,  I will say one thing, Katharine needs to change her name to Ella Fitzgerald Timoney by default.

Big Yellow Jacket – Silhouette

BYJ is Zach Mulcahy from Tramore. Zack first started sending me his work in 2018 but I hadn’t heard from him since late 2020 with release of his haunting folkesque track Different Souls featuring Kayla Williams. Well, he’s back under a new guise and new alt-pop sound with the help of the amazing 1000 Beasts  and it sounds great. Proper chilled vibes and I’m excited to hear what’s next.

Lemon Lake – You Need To Go Now

Lemon Lake was created during Lockdown and consists of two sessions musicians living in London, Donal Pywell a former bass player for Ailbhe Reddy and Fernando Sanchez from Chile.

This is their debut single and it’s excellent. If you like that Slo-Mo / Weeknd  buzz? This one is for you.

Throatsugar – Ascend

This is the debut single from Collen Heavey. The track started out as a home project, she then got into the studio with the fantastic Mick Heffernan who’s worked in the past with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Dermot Kennedy. Even though this is Collen's debut solo single, she has been a busy bee for the last couple of years along with her band Brass Phantoms, they have performed at a bunch of festivals and supported  Delorentos among others.  A quote from Colleen “The track was inspired by the work of James Joyce, as well as the feeling of not wanting to wait around for things to happen anymore. “

This a powerful electropop beaut!
