Calls for a Maritime Museum in Waterford

There are renewed calls for a dedicated maritime museum in Waterford.

People Before Profit (PBP) say Waterford is an outlier among other European port cities in not having a museum given the city and county's rich maritime history.

Waterford PBP member John Cloono told WLR News it's vital that we remember the city and county's proud maritime importance:

"Our history goes way back to the Viking era and beyond and yet we're one of the few maritime cities in Europe that doesn't have a maritime museum.

"We're lacking in our maritime heritage, we had a shipbuilding industry here in the past, we've a whole host of maritime villages all along the river and we have sites, historical sites, think of the Knights Templar and Woodstown on the banks of the river as well".

"No brainer"

The idea of a maritime museum has been suggested on a few occasions but has never come to pass. John Cloono says it's something the public, particularly those involved in maritime groups, would really like to see:

"We think a maritime museum would be ideal - a no brainer really - and it's surprising and disappointing that to date we haven't had a well-established maritime museum."

John Cloono says the next stage would be to call a public meeting with people who would be interested in developing an advocacy group. He would like to see Waterford's seafaring traditions taking its place alongside the other museums in the Viking Triangle.
