Local Link in discussions with NTA on East Waterford service shortage

The managing director of LocalLink says they could potentially step in and provide East Waterford services come November.

People in Passage, Dunmore and Portlaw are now facing an uncertain six weeks as Suirway cease trading on October 31st.

There has been multiple calls for an alternative service to be provided, while a petition has begun to save rural transport services in the locality.

Managing Director of Local Link, James O'Donoghue says they're engaging with the National Transport Authority.

"We're engaging with the NTA. We've been in contact with them on an almost daily basis anyway because we're managing services down here on their behalf. They are aware of the situation and are very conscious of the concerns in the area too. In fact, even in the last couple of days - we've received probably about 20 or 20 emails and yesterday I even received the petition with hundreds of names into my office here - so I have passed that onto the NTA."

Mr. O'Donoghue is confident that the people of East Waterford won't be left without a service should funding become available.

"Obviously - time is getting short now. It's not that easy to set up a service from scratch almost. There's a shortage of vehicles and drivers and all of that is impacting upon what can be done on a short term basis. Having said that, if the funding is there from the NTA - I'm sure that there will be a service put in place, and it would be done in time."
