Man (80s) found guilty of indecent assault in Waterford

A man has been found guilty of indecently assaulting a teenager in Waterford in the 1980s.

Waterford Circuit Criminal Court heard the assaults took place at a bookmakers in the city centre in the 1980s.

Thomas Terry Cummins was accused of indecently assaulting the then 15 year old at a bookmakers office in John Street in Waterford City in the early 1980s.

The accused, from Hillview and formerly of the Cork Road, now aged 82, denied the accusations.

But a jury has found him guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault against the youth this morning.

State prosecutor Conor O'Doherty said Terry Cummins had groomed, coerced and manipulated his victim.

He described it as a shocking case that "shines a light into a dark corner" which was illuminated by [the victim's] willingness to come forward" almost 40 years later.
