Hurricane Ian is now approaching the south west coast of Florida, having been upgraded to a Category 4.

Yesterday it swept across Cuba, knocking out the power for the whole country, with maximum sustained winds of nearly 155 miles per hour.

More than 2 million people along Florida's Gulf Coast are under evacuation orders.

Waterford native, Brendan Doherty, originally of Faithlegg - has been living on the north east coast, in Jacksonville for the last five years.

He's been speaking to WLR News Editor Mary Ann Vaughan as the hurricane approaches.

Experts are warning about catastrophic storm surges raising the water level as much as twelve to sixteen feet.

"The big fear would be any potential for tornadoes. That depends which side that storm passes us on."
