Lowry says he's excited to play first round of Irish Open alongside Waterford's Séamus Power

Former Open Champion Shane Lowry is excited to be playing the first round of the Irish Open alongside Waterford's Séamus Power.

Power will join Lowry tomorrow morning at Mount Juliet along with England's Tyrrell Hatton.

Lowry is hoping to add another Irish Open title to his list of accolades while Séamus is playing at his home open for the first time since 2019.

Shane Lowry says Séamus is after putting in a huge amount of work to get to this point of his career:

"Yeah look, obviously I've known Séamus a long time - I've played amateur golf with him, I've played Boys' Golf for Ireland with him.

"I've seen him around the PGA Tour a little bit a few years ago and then, all of a sudden, he has figured out a way to get to that next level that it takes to get into the top 50 in the world.

"It's great. It's great for him and great for Irish golf. It's great for a place like Waterford to have a player like that.

"I just think, the two of us have started together, we went different ways and now we've ended up in the same place.

"So, that's pretty cool."

The 2022 Horizon Irish Open gets underway tomorrow (Thursday) morning at the Kilkenny venue.

Shane Lowry famously won the competition as an amateur in 2009, while Séamus Power will be looking for his first tour victory on home soil.

He has risen to 36th in the world in recent weeks.

Power, Lowry and Hatton tee off at 8am for Round 1.

WLR will have live updates from the Irish Open on our bulletins throughout the competition.
