Patrick Hurney wins August WLR / Granville Hotel GAA Award

Ballinacourty forward Patrick Hurney is the August winner of the WLR/Granville Hotel GAA Award.

Hurney kicked eight points in a man of the match performance as Ballinacourty beat Rathgormack in the re-scheduled 2020 county football final at Walsh Park. It was his fourth senior football medal.

Hurney was named Waterford Footballer of the Year in 2015.

This is his second monthly award. He won his first eight years ago when he netted ten goals for Abbeyside in the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

Hurney was delighted to win a second award.

“It’s a pleasant surprise. It’s always great to get recognition individually as well as collectively. I’m just delighted. First of all with winning the county title but secondly with the award as well.”

It was a family affair for the former Deise forward as his brothers were among the management team that captured the Conway Cup.

“It meant a lot having my brother Laurence as manager, and Gary as a selector. It meant a lot that way but it meant a lot to get over the line. We’ve had a couple of defeats over the past few years. It was great to get over the line and get my fourth medal – it's nearly ten years since my last!”.
