O'Brien and Kiely win September WLR / Granville Hotel GAA Award

Roanmore captain Gavin O'Brien and Dungarvan forward Michael Kiely are the joint-winners of the September WLR / Granville Hotel Monthly GAA Award.

O'Brien led Roanmore to a first county hurling final since 1990, while Kiely was the star man for Dungarvan hitting scoring 4 goals in three games in their run to the semi-finals.

Roanmore captain O'Brien led the Sky Blues to their first county final in 31 years with man of the match displays against Lismore and Dungarvan.

He was delighted to get the nod from the judges.

Peter Queally's side reached the decider with a six-point win over Dungarvan and O'Brien said that it was a great feeling.

"This is a great honour for myself, my club and my family. Obviously with individual awards, you always want a team award first. I'm very honoured to receive the award. It was a real joy for us to see family members and club members coming onto the field and to see the joy that it brought to everyone. We're going to take all the positives from this year and bring them with us going forward."

Dungarvan forward Kiely was delighted and surprised to receive the award. A member of the inter-county football panel, Kiely showed there's plenty of hurling in him too this season.
He says he's very grateful to be acknowledged for his performances, and says it was a case of 'right place, right time' for his hat-trick against rivals Abbeyside in the quarter-final.
"I was fairly shocked - it was something that never even crossed my mind. I'm very grateful to win the award. The win against Abbeyside was the main thing. I was lucky with the way things fell for me on the day, and the way things panned out. I was in the right place and right time for a couple of the goals. Our manager Peter Smith made a huge difference this year. We knew we had the hurling in us. It was just a matter of tapping into that and we made great strides forward."
