The Sporting Life | January 17th | Dave & Alan Kirby
A father and son who both played football for Waterford are featured on this week's Sporting Life.
Dave Kirby played for the club in the early 70s during the golden era for the Blues.
His son Alan went on to play with the youth team in Aston Villa before returning to play for Waterford United in 99.
The winger was also part of the Ireland team to win a bronze medal at the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1997 - Ireland's first and only ever medal at a FIFA World Cup
Ireland lost 1-0 to Argentina in the semi-final of the competition.
Alan recalls the experience in Malaysia and playing alongside people like Damien Duff and marking Argentinian star Cambiasso.
He also played for St Patrick's Athletic, Sligo Rovers, Sporting Fingal, and Longford United.
Alan infamously scored for Longford against Waterford United in the FAI Cup final in 2004 - a bittersweet moment Alan reflects on.
Dave's career was also illustrious - he played for League of Ireland clubs Limerick and Cork Hibs as well as Waterford, playing regularly in Europe and touring the US.
During the chat, Dave recalls one famous match in Flower Lodge in 1972 between Waterford and Cork Hibs - the Blues needed a draw to win the league and were 2 nil down with 11 minutes left on the clock. Waterford came back to win 3-2.
Dave and Alan are in conversation with WLR's News & Sports Editor Julie Smyth, who also happens to be Dave's daughter and Alan's sister!
