Under 20 glory for Ballygunner

Under 20 glory for Ballygunner

Ballygunner completed a treble of county titles at a foggy Walsh Park this afternoon as the Gunners under 20s got the better of Abbeyside by 0-19 to 0-10.

Waterford minor star Patrick Fitzgerald fired 14 points (12 frees and two from play). He completed the under 20 championship with 3-43 in three games. Centre back Ronan Power was named man of the match.

Abbeyside, without Waterford senior Michael Kiely, went 5-1 up after ten minutes. The underdogs still led by six points to four at the first water break with Déise minor Charlie Treen shooting all six. The Gunners took over in the second quarter and seven Patrick Fitzgerald points put them 10-7 ahead at half time. Treen also totalled seven in the opening 30 minutes.

Ballygunner opened up a six point gap on the restart with Fitzgerald and Tom Gallagher on target. Abbeyside got within four as super sub Jack McGrath hit two in a row either side of the second water break. Five Fitzgerald frees settled the Gunners as they added another county trophy to the cabinet. The winners could afford to shoot 12 wides.
