Heartbreak for Waterford FC in Finn Park

By Matt Keane

Waterford FC's dream of playing European Football next year died in Finn Park last night.

Adam Foley scored the only goal of the game in the 28th minute.

Brian Murphy the Blues goalkeeper produced a stunning save from Barry McNamee five minutes into the second half.

Waterford dominated the remainder of the second period but they were found wanting in the final third of the park and the closest they came to a goal arrived in the 4th minute of stoppage time when Kurtis Byrne struck an upright from two yards range.

Waterford have not won a game in Ballybofey since 2013 and this defeat is the costliest of them all.

Waterford FC manager Franny Rocket told WLR's Matt Keane that he was devastated with the outcome.

"I wanted to do it so much for all the people in Waterford, the supporters who have been phenomenal to us, the likes of Alan Reynolds who put a serious group of players together."

"I'm devastated, I just want to pick those players back up."

He added that they had a good chat after the final whistle and that he is "hoping that these players, wherever their future lies, that they can kick on and use this as in inspiration to move forward and get to these heights again".
