Roy Keane calls Kobbie Mainoo’s brother ‘idiot’ and urges fight for Man Utd spot

Roy Keane Urges Kobbie Mainoo to Fight for Manchester United Place Amid Loan Speculation
Roy Keane has urged Kobbie Mainoo to remain patient and fight for his place at Manchester United, while also criticising the influence of the midfielder’s family amid growing speculation about his future.
The former United captain was speaking on the Stick to Football podcast after reports suggested Mainoo had explored the possibility of a loan move away from Old Trafford earlier this season.
Mainoo Still Waiting for First Premier League Start
England international Mainoo has yet to make a Premier League start this campaign under new United boss Ruben Amorim, with his limited minutes becoming a major talking point among supporters and pundits alike. The 20-year-old midfielder received a warm reception from fans when he came off the bench against Bournemouth, highlighting his popularity despite his lack of game time. A request to leave on loan was rejected by the club in August, but speculation continues ahead of the January transfer window.Keane: ‘Train Like a Beast and Prove Them Wrong’
Keane questioned why Mainoo would consider a move away at this stage of his career, insisting the youngster should embrace the challenge of breaking into the United first team. “Are you telling me he can’t sit there for another six months?” Keane said. “He’s 20 years of age – what’s wrong with sitting and learning your trade? “Sometimes a manager is on your case, and what you have to do is look at a manager and go, ‘I’ll prove you wrong.’ “Every day is your challenge to prove the manager wrong. You train like a beast, and when the manager is picking the team, they’re thinking, ‘he has to play.’ That’s the mindset he needs.”Keane Criticises Family Influence
Keane also aimed strong criticism at Mainoo’s half-brother, suggesting outside voices were unhelpful at such a crucial stage of the midfielder’s development. “When he’s got his idiot of a brother doing all that, we shouldn’t even be giving his brother the time of day,” Keane added. “Sometimes you’re just surrounded by idiots, especially families.”Competition With Bruno Fernandes
United manager Ruben Amorim has indicated that Mainoo is competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting role. Fernandes has started all 16 of United’s Premier League matches so far this season and remains one of the club’s most influential players. Keane pointed out that circumstances can change quickly in football. “Bruno might get injured. There was talk about Bruno leaving in the summer, and he might still leave next year,” Keane said. “So you bide your time as a young player.”England Future and World Cup Ambitions
Mainoo won the most recent of his 10 England caps in September 2024, but has yet to feature under new national team manager Thomas Tuchel. With the next World Cup approaching, regular club football will be key to maintaining his international ambitions. Keane believes staying at United could be the biggest test of all. “I’ve no problem with players going out on loan, it can work for everybody,” he said. “But sometimes your biggest challenge is right here at Manchester United – getting into that first team. “Even if the manager says you’re not getting in ahead of Bruno, your mindset should be: ‘I’m going to prove you wrong.’”Sports News on WLR is with thanks to Rapid Cabs - call 85 85 85 or download the app today.
