Sheedy and Newell depart Waterford FC

Waterford FC have this evening confirmed the departure of management duo Kevin Sheedy and Mike Newell.

In a statement released on their twitter page, the club said the departure was by 'mutual consent'.

The pair took the helm of the club in January, following the departure of John Sheridan in September after just eight games in charge to manage Wigan Athletic. The Blues were then looked after by Franny Rockett for the remainder of the season, which saw them finish in fifth place and narrowly miss out on European qualification.

It was former Ireland International Sheedy’s first full-time role in senior management. Unfortunately his time was marked by heavy defeats, the Blues have lost 7 of their 9 league outings so far, and are currently bottom of the league table.

After such an inauspicious season so far, and rumours of arguments and low morale in the camp, the departure will not come as a surprise to Blues fans.

Academy boss Mike Geoghegan is to take charge in the interim.

Next up for the side is a home game against Drogheda United at the RSC on Saturday at 6pm.
