Kilmeaden councillor, John O'Leary has been elected the new Mayor of Waterford City and County Council.
The Fianna Fáil representative has previously Deputy Mayor in 2018/2019 but was elected to the top role at this afternoon's AGM in City Hall.
He is also currently Cathaoirleach of the Comeragh District, having been elected to that position last year.
Sinn Féin's Joeanne Bailey was also nominated.
The resulting vote saw 25 votes go to Councillor O'Leary and five to Councillor Bailey. Three councillors abstained.
Councillor O'Leary takes over the mayoral chain from Independent Councillor Joe Kelly.
Speaking ahead of today's AGM, Councillor Kelly spoke to WLR News about his year as Waterford's First Citizen.
"Every event really has been a high," he said, "There hasn't been any low. The year has gone very fast and I've enjoyed every minute of it."
He says there were a number of stand-out events including the visit in March of Prince Charles and Camilla:
"I had the honour of welcoming the couple to Waterford and bringing them on a tour of the museum."
Continuing Councillor Kelly said, "What I said at the start, when I was first elected mayor, was that I wanted to be the mayor for everyone and that I would be as active as I possibly could.
"I think I've done that. I've accepted every invitation that I could accept, other than when I'm double-booked or sometimes even treble-booked with some events.
"I tried to put importance on everything because it's important to me."
Mayor John O'Leary will now hold the position until June of 2023.
