Offshore wind farm proposed for Helvic Head to Tramore

Wind turbines from Helvic Head to Tramore are being proposed by a project called North Celtic Sea.

Concerns from Waterford people are being raised about how close the turbines will be to the shore, with some saying they could be as close as 10km.

"I and other elected representatives have received close to 500 emails requesting that these turbines are set the European norm of about 25km offshore," Councillor Eamonn Quinlan said.

If it goes ahead, it will be one of the biggest offshore wind farms in Europe.

Public meetings are being held by North Celtic Sea in order to give locals an opportunity to have their say.

The two meetings will take place this week and Councillor Quinlan recommends going.

"If this goes ahead, these turbines will be with the people of Waterford for a generation so I'd very much encourage the people of Waterford to engage with this topic," he said.

The open meetings will take place tomorrow at 10am in the Riverstown Community Centre in Tramore and at 4pm in the Park Hotel Dungarvan.

North Celtic Sea is a renewable energy project that will help to decarbonise the energy supply and reduce emissions.

Energia will be conducting surveys off the coast of Waterford over the next few weeks to gather information that will help to nail down an exact location for the proposed wind farm.
