Waterford marks World Down Syndrome Day

Today is World Down Syndrome Day.

'With Us Not For Us' is the theme of this year's event.

The initiative is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 and is designed to create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down Syndrome.

Elaine Saunders from the Waterford/South Kilkenny branch of Down Syndrome Ireland outlined some of the activities they're engaging in to mark the occasion.

"On Sunday we launched our Sunny South-East Cycle which takes place on Sunday May 14th, starting and finishing at the SETU Arena. Today, we're holding a party for our members at Activate which is going to be great."

She also gave an overview of some of the branch's ongoing activities.

"We provide occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and physio for members," she explains.

Members also enjoy activities such as swimming, therapeutic horse riding, gym classes, bowling etc.
