Four awards for WLR at the 2023 IMRO National Radio Awards

WLR are celebrating IMRO National Radio Award success once again, having collected four awards at the IMRO National Radio Awards last night.

WLR won one gold, two silver and one bronze accolade - on another fantastic night for the station.

Deise Today, presented by Damien Tiernan and produced by Jennifer Long, was named Local / Regional Current Affairs Programme of the Year.

Deise Today Producer, Jennifer Long said it was a testament to the listenership the station has, and "to the support we get not only from our colleagues in WLR but the listeners who tune in day in and day out."

Speaking after the award announcements were made, she said it was a big night for Deise Today and for WLR as a station. She said they were delighted to be attending the award ceremony and again thanked the public for their support.

WLR News won Silver in the Local / Regional News Programme of the Year category, for their Waterford @ 1 special. The WLR News team is led by editor Kieran Foley, Dymphna Nugent, Jordan Norris and Kyle Butler - and the entry was orchestrated by former News Editor MaryAnn Vaughan.

Dymphna Nugent won big on the night - also winning Silver in the News Programme / News Event of the Year category for her documentary Drug Debt and Intimidation, which delved into the issues of drug addiction and violence in County Waterford.

21-year-old Mollai Gough, who joined WLR last year, also tasted IMRO success for the first time - as her Abair Amach E - Alzheimers Special claimed a bronze award in the Craoltoireacht Le Gaeilge category.

The IMRO Radio Awards 2023 rolled out its red carpet to welcome the finest talents in Irish radio from across the island to the gala event at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny.

This year's event was hosted by comedian and broadcaster Oliver Callan, and with IMRO at the helm as the headline sponsor, the event was a great evening of recognition, reconnection and camaraderie.

IMRO Radio Awards Committee Chairman Chris Doyle commented, "It is great to have the radio sector come together and celebrate the outstanding creativity and talent producing amazing radio in Ireland. Congratulations to all the winners.”

Celene Craig, Broadcasting Commissioner, commented, “Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland’s new media regulator and development agency, would like to congratulate all nominees and winners this evening. An Coimisiún is delighted to celebrate the talent and innovation at work across the radio sector today and recognises that both winners and nominees tonight are an example of broadcasting expertise and experience that delivers quality programming day in and day out for listeners. As the evening wrapped up, there was a clear sense of optimism for the future of radio in Ireland. Here's to another year of dynamic content and the talented individuals from both in front of and behind the mics who make it all happen.
