Gilbert O'Sullivan becomes Freeman of City and County

Singer and songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan (77) has vowed that a Waterford concert "will happen" in the near future.

The Cork Road native was speaking to WLR News this evening as he was bestowed with the honour of Freedom of Waterford City and County.

"We're doing two shows in Cork and two in Dublin in September. The plan is to come to Waterford. That will happen, there's no question about that," he said. "I can't say when just yet but we've got to do it."

Mayor of Waterford Cllr Joe Conway presented Gilbert O'Sullivan with the prestigious accolade at City Hall.

Waterford councillors were in attendance as well as Waterford Minister Mary Butler, MEP Grace O'Sullivan, TDs Matt Shanahan and Marc O Cathasaigh and Senator John Cummins.

Members of Gilbert O'Sullivan's family from the UK travelled to join him for the occasion as well as family members in Waterford including his 97-year-old aunt Bid O'Rourke.
