Brilliant Blues overcome champions in Tallaght

Brilliant Blues overcome champions in Tallaght

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division

SHAMROCK ROVERS 1 - 3 WATERFORD FC

A famous night in Tallaght Stadium as Waterford FC defeated the league champions for the first time in their own back yard and made it back to back wins on the road over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Keith Long's charges backed up Friday's win over Sligo with another brilliant display of attacking football to deservedly take the spoils. The Dublin venue is becoming a happy hunting ground for the Blues who won the promotion play-off at the same venue last November.

The visitors made two changes from the side that beat Sligo on Friday night with Maleace Asamoah and Robert McCourt coming in for Christie Pattisson (who scored the winner) and Ben McCormack.

Waterford got off to the ideal start and were ahead after just three minutes when a corner from Dean McMenamy was deflected into his own net by Rovers goalkeeper Leon Pohls. The hosts were level though five minutes later when Johnny Kenny fires past Sam Sargent from close range on the second attempt, an incredible opening to this Tallaght thriller.

Both sides played a nice brand of attacking football and on 17 minutes the visitors restored their lead as Dean McMenamy fired low to the bottom corner, an excellent finish giving Pohls no chance whatsoever.

Rovers piled the pressure on the Blues early in the 2nd-half but the Waterford defence stood tall throughout despite a few nervy moments. It got even better for Waterford on 54 minutes when the lively Conor Parsons scored a stunning goal which sent the large Blues support into raptures, a bullet which has to be in the mix for goal of the season.

The hosts did create a lot of chances as they dominated possession but couldn't find a way past a resolute Waterford defence.

A famous result in the capital as the large contingent of Blues fans roared their team to victory, brilliant to see. Waterford will now be hoping to carry this momentum into their home form when they return to the RSC on Friday evening with Dundalk coming to town (7:45pm kick-off).
