Villa FC Confirmed as Founding Members of New FAI National League
Waterford club Villa FC have secured their place as founding members of the new Football Association of Ireland (FAI) National League, marking a major milestone for the club and a significant boost for football in the south east.
The club confirmed that the FAI has accepted its application, which means Villa FC will compete in the new league when it launches in August 2026.
Major Step for Player Pathways in Waterford
As a founding member, Villa FC will now work closely with the FAI and other clubs. Together, they will help deliver a major restructuring of Irish domestic football. As a result, the league will create clearer and stronger player development pathways.
Importantly, the FAI National League will operate as a third-tier men’s competition. It will sit below the League of Ireland Premier Division and First Division. In addition, the league will feature 20 teams split into North and South divisions.
Crucially, clubs will have promotion opportunities into the League of Ireland structure. At the same time, relegation back to provincial competitions will also apply.
Director of Football: ‘A Natural Step Forward’
Villa FC Director of Football Conor Coad said the achievement reflects years of hard work across the club.
“This milestone reflects the collective efforts of our players, coaches, members and supporters over many years,” Coad said.
“Entry into the FAI National League is a significant yet natural step in our vision. It allows us to provide a sustainable, high-performance environment and a clear development pathway for players across Waterford and the wider south east region.
“We now look forward to the challenge of competing at national level and continuing to represent our club community with pride.”
‘A Landmark Moment’ in Villa FC History
Meanwhile, club Chairperson Paul Morrissey described the announcement as a defining moment for Villa FC.
“This is a landmark moment in the history of the club,” Morrissey said. “It reflects the dedication of everyone involved, both past and present.
“Becoming a founding member of the FAI National League shows the progress we have made. Moreover, it reinforces our ambition for the future.
“We are proud to represent Waterford at national level and look forward to the opportunities this league will create for our players, coaches and wider community.”
What Is the FAI National League?
The FAI National League is a new national competition developed by the Football Association of Ireland. It forms a key part of the FAI’s Football Pathways Plan.
The association announced the league in 2024, with the first season scheduled for August 2026. Its main aim is to bridge the gap between local and regional football and the professional League of Ireland.
As a result, ambitious clubs across the country will gain access to a structured national platform. Over time, this should create long-term opportunities for players, coaches and communities.
Boost for Football in the South East
Villa FC’s inclusion ensures that Waterford will have national-level representation in the new league. Consequently, the region’s football footprint will continue to grow.
Now, the club turns its attention to preparation. Villa FC will aim to build on this momentum and compete strongly when the FAI National League begins in 2026.
