Dunmore East RNLI lifeboat damaged in harbour crash

Dunmore East RNLI lifeboat damaged in harbour crash

The Dunmore East RNLI lifeboat has been damaged in a crash in Dunmore Harbour.

The incident happened around midnight last night, when it appears a fishing trawler on its way out to sea lost control, hitting the pontoon the lifeboat was berthed on.

Kilmore Quay lifeboat is on standby until a relief RNLI lifeboat is brought to Dunmore. That is expected to arrive sometime this morning (Friday).

Jim Griffin is Officer in Charge of Dunmore East coastguard.

He says they were alerted to the incident when their pagers went off just after midnight:

"From what we can gather one of the trawlers was leaving to go out to the fishing grounds, had some mechanical difficulty and lost steerage and it seemed to hit pontoon that the lifeboat and pilot boat are berthed on in Dunmore East - it shunted the pontoon quite a distance and trapped the lifeboat between pontoons".

No one was injured in the incident.

However, the fishing trawler was also damaged and an investigation will now take place into what happened, and the damage will be assessed.
