The Tramore golfer is on 5 under par after a round of 67. England's Gian Marco Petrozzi leads from 10 under

The Ireland team which includes Alex Gleeson and John Murphy is currently in 9th place overall.

96 players representing 16 nations yesterday teed off on the first of five days of golf at the Faldo-designed course at the Sporting Club Berlin.

The five best stroke play scores out of six for each team on the first two days will decide the top-8 teams that qualify for Flight A and have a chance at winning medals in the subsequent match play stages.

Ireland, along with Iceland, and Germany are all within two shots of eight place.

The Irish team will be hoping to improve their scores today in order to qualify for the medal contention matches.

England currently lead the way on a total of 11-under-par, two shots ahead of Sweden who are nine-under. France and Denmark are two shots further back on seven-under par, tied for third, while the Netherlands and Finland are tied for fifth on five-under.

Scotland and Spain occupy seventh and eight place on three-under and two-under par respectively.

Serbia are represented for the first time in history at the event after a rare withdrawal earlier this year meant their fourth place finish in the
Division 2 championship last year was good enough to earn them a place.
