Waterford native leads the Irish charge in medieval combat

A Waterford native is leading the charge for Ireland when it comes to the hard-hitting spectacle of medieval combat.

Anthony Power, from The Nire in County Waterford, was one of those to represent Ireland at the recent International Medieval Combat World Championships in Scotland.

The sport sees people partake in full contact battles armed with swords, shields and axes, while kitted out in a full suit of armour.

"You have to have faith in your armour," Anthony told WLR. "If you're like, "Oh my God, get me out of here!" all you have to do is go to the ground, you're not going to get hit. If he (your opponent) is coming at you and he sees you taking a knee, he'll just stop. It's if you don't see them coming, that's the trouble!"

He says Ireland put in a good showing at the recent World championships.

"There were 32 countries represented and we did well," he said. "Lara, our longsword, she's won the gold medal two years in a row for the longsword. It'd take a good man to put her down!"
