Waterford TD stands by Sinn Féin presidential candidate

Waterford's Sinn Fein TD insists it was not a mistake run Liadh Ni Riada as their candidate for President.

Ms Ni Riada came fourth overall with 6.3 per cent of votes, well down on the performance of Martin Mc Guinness in 2011.

Waterford TD David Cullinane admitted to WLR News that he is disappointed with the vote for the party's candidate.

But Waterford-based Green Party Senator Grace O'Sullivan believes the poppy issue hurt Ms Ní Riada's chances. The Ireland South MEP had said she would wear the controversial poppy if elected president.

Senator O'Sullivan felt this would have disappointed some of the party's core vote, and may have pushed a number of them towards the incumbent, Michael D. Higgins.
