Fears Waterford could be only city without its own Garda Division

Fears Waterford could be only city without its own Garda Division

A Sinn Fein TD says Waterford is once again being treated differently to the other cities.

A massive shake-up of An Garda Siochana could see the Waterford division joined up with Carlow and Kilkenny.

The new proposed policing model would see the number of divisions cut from 28 to 19.

Deputy David Cullinane says it will reduce the number of Superintendents and Chief Superintendents:

"Waterford City and County, at the moment, is one division.

"It's being proposed that we create a new division which would include Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford and potentially with the headquarters of that division in Kilkenny or elsewhere and not in Waterford.

"It would be an absolute disaster again for the status of the city.

"It's worse when the proposals include two divisions for Cork - one in the city and one in the county, a division for Limerick City and County, a division for Galway City and County and a number of divisions in Dublin."

He says Waterford will be the only major city without its own division:

"That's a massive concern in terms of resources.

"It doesn't fit with government policy in terms of the national planning framework and project 2040, which promises to increase the population of the city by 60%.

"There will be a concern again that Waterford is being treated differently as a city and as a city and county from cities and counties like Galway and Limerick.

"Here we go again when there are changes being made and Waterford is in the lower tier rather than in the top tier when changes are being made."

Deputy Cullinane says he's not against reform of An Garda Siochana:

"If money can be saved and there can be efficiencies achieved obviously they should be.

"At the same time, there's a number of changes which are being proposed which don't make sense.

"Waterford City and County, in my opinion, is big enough to justify its own division, it's working well as a division.

"Within that division, we have three districts which include West Waterford, Tramore and Waterford and they have their own Superintendents.

"It's also proposed that that's done away with so you won't have geographically based Superintendents."
