IT Carlow's governing body approves application to merge with Waterford IT

The Technological University for the South East looks set to go ahead now as both governing bodies of IT Carlow and Waterford IT have approved the merger.

A key meeting of Carlow's governing body was held today where they gave the go-ahead to proceed, after Waterford did the same on Tuesday.

That's despite Waterford IT's TUI members voting against it last Friday.

Today's decision paves the way for the application to be lodged tomorrow.

An international panel will examine the application and if approved the Technological University for the South East could be formed from January 1st.

Declan Doyle, Vice President of IT Carlow, says the move has been a long time coming:

"Yeah a huge decision today. The governing body of IT Carlow has approved an application to Minister Simon Harris, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, to submit the application to establish a university here in the South East.

"It's been a long road to this point and we really look forward to the next step of creating the university that the region has long looked for."
