Struggle to fill vacant council houses in Dungarvan

The fact that Waterford Council is struggling to fill nine homes in Dungarvan despite huge housing demand has been labelled 'shocking'.

There are currently 13 vacant homes in Dungarvan, with 9 of the houses concentrated in two particular estates.

Paul Johnston of the Council's Housing Department told councillors that the homes were proving "difficult to let".

Cllr. Damien Geoghegan told the meeting, he believes it is "totally unacceptable":

"The fact that we have housing estates in Dungarvan that we are finding it difficult to get people to go and take houses there at a time when we are experiencing a shortage of housing and quite a lot of people are waiting on our housing list to be housed, is shocking and totally unacceptable."

The Fine Gael councillor said the local authority needed to deal with the underlying issues that exist in those estates.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnston also revealed that overall only 1.5% of Council houses in County Waterford are currently vacant.

He said the target for vacant houses was 2% of all stock.
