Should Waterford have a designated-doggy park?

Waterford is one of the only cities in the country that does not have a dog-friendly park, with six off-the-leash parks in Cork alone.

That's according to Sinn Féin Councillor for Waterford City South Joeanne Bailey, who will bring a motion to this month’s Waterford Council Plenary meeting calling for the introduction of a dog park for the city and county.

Speaking to Damien Tiernan on Déise Today, Joanne said that Waterford is lagging behind when it comes to having a space for dogs, where they can roam freely off their leash.

“I have engaged with other councillors from around Ireland over the summer months to examine where dog parks have been introduced and the work involved in developing them.

"The feedback I received found the introduction of a dog park to be an overwhelming success wherever they have been developed," she said.

Cllr Bailey is proposing that an existing space located in the city and owned by Waterford City and County Council, would be used for the dog park.

“I suggest that we could have one in the city for example at the Kilbarry Nature Park, and one in the county along the Greenway or in Dungarvan.

“There is nothing more that a dog loves, than having the chance to go for a run, play with other dogs and enjoy the freedom that a dog park can offer. A designated area would allow dog walkers to leave their dogs off the lead and still be in an enclosed area," Cllr Bailey said.

The Sinn Féin Cllr is calling on all councillors to support the motion at next Thursday's (October 14th) Plenary meeting.
