"What is going on?" - Waterford bus challenges continue

Concerns have been expressed on the viability of a number of Waterford's inner-city bus services.

Lenghty delays, no shows and altered services were reported in a number of locations on St. Patrick's Weekend.

Sinn Fein Councillor Joanne Bailey raised the issue at this month's Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford City and County Council, and outlined some of what had been reported in various areas.

"What is going on with Bus Eireann was the conversation this week by a lot of people. There's been ongoing reports and complaints of delays in service, no shows, overcrowded buses, and unfriendly drivers toward people with prams and wheelchairs", said Cllr. Bailey. "On St Patrick's Day, the W3 bus, was due at 10.45. People at Greenfields Estate were waiting on that bus and when they rang the station, they were told it would be 12.45 by the time it would get there. Everyone understands busy days, it's going to take that long, but going back over all our notes for the last two years, we are constantly raising the bus services in the city."

Cllr. Bailey believes that services aren't good enough, and they haven't been for a long time.

"Bus routes to the hospital from Paddy Browns Road have been raised numerous times. Bus shelters are needed in many areas. The updating of signs, that was raised by me back six months ago and there's still signs missing at bus stations around City South. It's just, what else can be done? I know it's been said that the National Transport Authority is coming back to us in a few weeks time, but we won't be happy with what they're telling us."

Issues in multiple areas were raised by various councillors at the meeting, and Waterford City and County Council committed to communicaring concerns with stakeholders.
