McCarthy solo goal sends Ballinacourty into quarter finals

Ballinacourty booked their place in the last eight of the Waterford SFC with a 3-10 to 0-9 victory over Brickey Rangers at Fraher Field.

Conor McCarthy, Dean Beresford and Patrick Hurney raised green flags for Pat Curran's side. Hurney finished as top scorer with 1-6 (1-4 in the second half) while McCarthy netted a wonder goal in the first half. Courty keeper Aaron Beresford saved an injury time penalty from Tom O'Connell. Conor McGrath got five points for the Brickeys (four frees).

Courty took the field without Neil Montgomery, Michael O'Halloran and Cian Fagan. They also lost Patrick Fitzgerald in the first half.

A wind assisted led 2-6 to 0-3 at the break. Corner back Conor McCarthy cut through the Brickeys defence on nine minutes and slammed the ball to the roof of the net for a super solo goal. On the stroke of half time, Darragh McGrath found Dean Beresford and he buried the ball to the bottom corner. Patrick Hurney, Charlie Treen, John Elsted and Aaron Beresford all split the posts.

On 45 minutes, Treen picked out Hurney and the former Waterford attacker billowed the roof of the net. Conor McGrath, Cormac O'Grady, Tom O'Connell and Philip Walsh kicked second half points for Brickeys. O'Connell won a last gasp penalty for Brickeys but his effort was saved by Aaron Beresford.
