Sam Bennett has won today’s 12th stage of the Giro D’Italia.
It’s the second stage win for the Carrick on Suir man in less than a week. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider ended Ireland’s 31-year wait for a Giro stage win last Friday.
He followed that up by claiming today’s stage in a rain-effected sprint on the race track at Imola.
The 27-year-old timed his move to perfection, launching a long sprint with 400 metres to go, to take the win from Danny van Poppel and Niccolo Bonifazio.
Britain’s Simon Yates maintains his overall lead, with Tom Dumoulin trailing him by 47 seconds.
Bennett’s stage win matches a feat achieved by Stephen Roche in the Giro in 1987 and he says it’s a special day.
