Calls for public swimming pool to be built in Dungarvan

Calls for public swimming pool to be built in Dungarvan

Demand is growing for a public swimming pool in Dungarvan, according to a local green party representative.

Currently, the only swimming pools are in private facilities, which limits availability for clubs and schools.

Criostoir O'Faolain, who's a volunteer with the Helvick lifeboat, says learning to be safe around water is essential

"I think there is a real demand for a public swimming pool in Dungarvan.

"There are a number of local groups and clubs that just don't have the facilities they need

"Dungarvan is a coastal town and a lot of people in the area get involved in water-based activities.

"The opportunity for local kids especially to have access to a local swimming pool, to learn how to swim and learn how to respect the water is hugely important."

Criostoir O'Faolain says local schools and clubs and people are travelling to Waterford to access Irish Water safety training.

The green party representative says he's made a submission to the county development plan on the issue.

"The plan itself isn't due to be put into effect until 2022, I know myself and others have written submissions to the plan to highlight the issue.

"There is quite a lot of funding for tourism, for sports, so the funding is there if the council did put plans together to develop such a facility.

"It's definitely something the council should be looking into."
