Kilkenny Council owe Waterford's Fire Service over half a million euro

The full cost of Waterford's Fire Service covering areas of Kilkenny are not being recouped by the council, according to an audit.

The report in Waterford City and County Council's finances has found that there is currently an annual shortfall of half a million euro.

Back in 1966, Waterford and Kilkenny's local authorities agreed that Waterford's fire service would cover a significant portion of Kilkenny, on a cost recovery basis.

Councillor Dónal Barry says what's owed should be charged.

"I'm not too sure whether there's still more money going back the years owed on the scheme," he said.

In response, the council told the auditor that discussions with Kilkenny County Council are ongoing about this issue.

There are calls for the council to hold a separate meeting in future to allow the annual audit report to be discussed.

He said about 15 minutes was spent discussing the report, but believes a whole meeting should be dedicated to it.

The audit also contained remarks about the Council having spent up to €740,000 clearing plastic waste from land owned by Councillor Declan Doocey's company.
