Nine Airbnb properties in Waterford investigated last year

Nine Airbnb properties in Waterford were being investigated by the City and County Council last year.

Figures published in today's Irish Independent show Waterford is one of 15 counties where action was being taken against suspected illegal Airbnbs.

Under the current regulations, properties can't be rented out for more than 90 days a year on websites like Airbnb without having planning permission.

Special permission is needed for year-round short-term letting.

During 2021, 11 warnings were issued by Waterford County Council, and nine investigations were started.

It's among the lower numbers in the South East, as neighbouring Wexford had 51 investigations, and Kilkenny had 86.

The impact of people putting vacant properties out for short-term letting instead of long-term, was discussed recently by Waterford councillors.

At the moment there are 66 properties in the county listed on Airbnb and just 14 on Daft.
