Motorsport Ireland yesterday (Tues) confirmed that Ireland is no longer being considered to host a round of the FIA World Rally Championship in 2025.

Waterford City was due to host a round of the championships next year, with the economy set to benefit millions of euros from the event.

However,  in a media statement on Tuesday afternoon, Motorsport Ireland said they had received confirmation from Minister Byrne, Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, that his Department would need “at least six months” to undertake further independent economic assessments and analysis of our proposal.

The closing date for the bidding process with WRC Promoter GmbH was the end of Q1 this year, a date that Motorsport Ireland said they had made both Minister Byrne and the Major Sports Events Unit aware of from the outset.

On this morning's (Wed) 'Deise Today', the President of Motorsport Ireland Aiden Harper spoke to Damien Tiernan about the turn of events.

Also on the programme was James Coleman from the Carrick-On-Suir Motor Club who also gave some local reaction.
