Waterford FC lose out to Candystripes at the Brandywell

Derry City 3 Waterford FC 0

Waterford FC learned some costly lessons at the Brandywell as they lost by three goals to nil to Derry City as Pat Hoban notched a hat trick.

The Blues made one change to the team that started on Monday evening with Harvey McAdam starting in place of Rowan McDonald and the team settled into the game well with little between the sides for the opening 30 minutes .

A quick through ball from Hoban sent Michael Duffy through behind the defence and but he missed the target.

However, the Blues fell behind four minutes before the break when the defence was caught napping as a quick free kick sent Duffy away and his low cross was touched home by Hoban.

Hoban got his second deep in injury time when the visitors failed to clear the ball and when it came back in, he managed an overhead kick to the bottom corner.

Waterford were reduced to ten men and fell three behind 8 minutes into the second half when Paul McMullen was dragged down by Darragh Leahy with Paul Horton pointing the penalty spot and producing a red card for the Blues' defender.

Hoban stepped up to send Sam Sargeant the wrong way and the three points were secured.

To their credit Waterford continued to press ahead and play some good football but the game was over as a contest.
