Waterford one point short of table topping Galway

Galway 0.13 - 0.12 Waterford

Waterford were agonisingly close to beating Galway in their top-of-the-table clash in Division 1A of the Camogie League on Saturday afternoon.

The minimum stood between the sides at the full-time whistle, with Galway needing two late scores to pull the result out of the fire.

The hosts had the start they would have wanted, racing into a three-point to no-score lead inside three minutes. They would go on to hit another three-point salvo, followed by a brace of points within the first twenty minutes.

Star attacker Beth Carton hit all of Waterford's four points in the opening period, but on her own, it was not enough to make inroads with Galway leading 10 points to four at the break.

The Déise came out of the changing rooms like a different team and would return the first-half favour to Galway shooting three unanswered scores to reduce the deficit to three, with Captain Lorraine Bray and Niamh Curran joining Carton in the scoring stakes.

Galway rallied through top scorer Carrie Dolan, but the visitors knocked them back once again with De La Salle duo Carton and goalkeeper Briann O'Regan punishing Galway's ill-discipline.

O'Regan nailed two long-range frees with Carton adding two points and free to take a two-point lead with ten minutes to go.

However, Galway were not to be denied. Dolan hit her eighth point of the afternoon with Ailish O Reilly adding one from play to wrestle the lead back from Waterford and managing to hold on to it until the whistle blew with the score at 0.13 to 0.12.
