Supermarkets to introduce shopping hours and checkouts for older people

Dunnes Stores in City Square in Waterford City has designated a checkout in their grocery department to older and vulnerable customers.

Checkout 10 will be assigned to these customers so they can shop more comfortably.

City Square says staff will also be available to assist customers with carrying their groceries to their car, taxi or bus stop if required.

They're asking people to abide by social distancing guidelines, allowing 1.5m distance between shoppers at all times, and to practice good hand hygiene on entering and exiting the shopping centre.

Meanwhile, Peter Mark, Boston Barbers, Inglot, Name it Waterford, Abrakebabra, Ramen City Square and O'Briens Cafe have all decided to close in City Square until further notice.

Debenhams will reduce their hours from Wednesday onwards.

Lidl is implementing priority shopping hours for the elderly due to the coronavirus.

The supermarket is prioritising older shoppers at stores nationwide from 9am until 11am every day from now on.

They will be able to avail of prioritised queuing and additional assistance during this time.

Lidl is asking that others allow more vulnerable customers to pick up the food and supplies they need during this time.

Tesco Ireland has announced a similar measure, promising "dedicated access" to over 65s on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before 9am.

The service will start this Wednesday.
