Ardmore mother-of-two's breast cancer appeal meets its target

People from Waterford and afar have raised money to meet an Ardmore woman's fundraiser for cancer treatment.

It means Carole Troy (46) now be able to access a drug not covered by her health insurance.

The mother-of-two was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in February and underwent chemo during lockdown. Just three weeks ago, she had surgery and was placed on Tamoxifen for 5-10 years and Herceptin injections for one year.

Her oncologist recommended her another drug called Pertuzamab, which was recently approved for breast cancer patients in Ireland. But as she is post surgery and chemo, she told Damien Tiernan on Deise Today that it is not approved for her, and she does not meet the HSE's criteria for access to the drug. Her only option is to pay for it herself.

Carole told the programme that a price is now on her future health and she just wants the opportunity to see her children grow up.

The fundraiser passed the €54,000 mark and, at the time of writing, stands at €58,000.

Speaking to WLR she said: "People who are complete strangers, people I don't know, sharing it and contributing to it. People here in the village of Ardmore have been just beyond amazing. I'm so proud to say that I'm from Ardmore, because they have all just come together, raised money to help me and done anything they can to get this €54,000 for me to allow me to get this treatment that will hopefully allow me to live a very long and happy life."

She also posted a message on the GoFundMe page, saying that any additional funds will be split between Breakthrough Cancer Research and West Waterford Hospice who gave "wonderful support and help" to her late sister-in-law Susie.
