Waterford Fall To First Home Defeat

Waterford FC 0 Sligo Rovers 1

Waterford FC slumped to their first home defeat of the season when they lost out to Sligo Rovers by one goal to nil at the RSC.

Waterford boss Keith Long had to plan without the midfield pairing of Barry Baggley and Harvey McAdam with Niall O Keeffe starting and Darragh Power returning after injury while Darragh Leahy was back in the side after his red card with Robbie McCourt dropping to the bench.

The Blues had a couple of good first half chances but Ed McGinty in the Sligo goal was in excellent form, first denying Ryan Burke who fired low across the goal, when he dived across to palm it away and then moments later he touched away a Grant Horton header after he met a delicate cross from Rowan McDonald.

At the other end, Sam Sargeant was also in fine form as he stopped Fabrice Hartman who was put through by Reece Hutchinson and then he touched a Nando Pijnaker header over the crossbar just before the break.

The Blues were rocked on 52 minutes when McGinty's goal kick was headed down by Max Mata to Ellis Chapman  and the midfielder made no mistake with the long range effort.

Sligo's Charlie Wiggett was lucky to remain on the field after he pulled back Maleace Asamoah who appeared to be clean through just before the hour. However, Marc Lynch only flashed a yellow and the resulting free kick was hit straight into the wall.

The Bit O' Red were reduced to ten men 14 minutes from time when Simon Power was dismissed for kicking out at Darragh Power but the Blues could not find a way through a resolute Sligo defence.
