Remembering John Hume - Deise Today Tuesday 4th August

On today's programme Maria speaks to a number of people about the late John Hume who passed away yesterday. The former SDLP leader died following a short illness. Maria hears from Fianna Fail Junior Minister Mary Butler; Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane who acknowledges the role played by John Hume in the Northern Ireland peace process; And Waterford auctioneer Des Purcell who knew John Hume and organised a number of events in Waterford at which he spoke. In fact John Hume was speaking in Tramore the night his home in Derry was petrol bombed.

Has alcohol intake increased in this country since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic? Maria hears from Eunan McKinney, head of advocacy with Alcohol Action Ireland.

And Maria also discusses the road closures in Tramore. We hear from two business owners with differing perspectives. Sandra Power is opening a new lingerie shop, Ladies Slip, later this month and says the closure will harm her business. While Red Lane Boutique owner Catherine Keirghery is in favour of the roadworks because of the smell coming from the sewerage system.

Liz Murphy discusses the issue of type 2 diabetes in children.

And Labour councillor Seamus Ryan & Lisduggan woman Paula McEvoy tell Maria about a proposed monument to people lost to suicide.
