Ireland at the centre of investigation into deaths of 39 migrants

The evidence trail in the investigation into the deaths of 39 migrants smuggled into the UK in a lorry is leading to Ireland.

A man from Northern Ireland has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people, and other offences including money laundering.

25-year-old Maurice Robinson of Laurel Drive, Craigavon, Co Armagh is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Detectives in Britain are also liaising with Gardaí here, who made a separate arrest at Dublin Port yesterday.

A man in his 20s from Northern Ireland was arrested in connection with the probe into the discovery of the bodies in Essex on Wednesday.

Three other people with Irish connections remain in custody in the UK - a 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland who was detained at Stansted Airport yesterday and an Irish couple who were arrested in Warrington, England.

Essex police have not yet confirmed the identities or nationalities of the 39 people.
